My new favorite veggie: Radishes

I encourage my clients to consume a serving of fruit or vegetable (or both!) at every meal and snack to help them meet their vitamin and mineral needs. Raw veggies are a great snack - they are fairly easy to store, either at room temp or in the fridge and are low in calories.

I was cruising around the grocery store last night, grabbing my usual work snacks and had decided that I was kind of over baby carrots as my go-to veggie. What else is crunchy, goes well with hummus or other dips and doesn't start to get soggy in a couple days? I look to my left and they they are: radishes! Not only do they fulfill my requirements for a crunchy veggie snack option, but they are also incredibly inexpensive at only 89 cents a bunch.

1 cup of sliced raw radishes are only about 20 calories and are a great source of vitamin C - providing 29% of your Daily Value (~17 mg). Another good reason to eat radishes: 2g of fiber per cup. Whole or cut up with hummus, spreadable cheese, a string cheese or light veggie dip and radishes make for a satisfying snack. Eat up!

Run a Marathon!

My last "long" run was this past Sunday - now it's taper time! Here is a interesting article on how to train for a marathon in about 2 months (typical marathon training is 3-4+ months depending on your base mileage).
Get out there and run! It's one of the most basic and enjoyable forms of exercise!

Eating healthy & environmentally friendly

http://health.yahoo.net/articles/womens-health/plastic-container-safe

I like this article because a lot of people don't understand the differences between plastics. There are certain containers that are meant to be reused. They are made from heavier plastics - and are great for snacks, leftovers and water/fluids. On the other hand, there are certain plastics - such as many water bottles (think aquafina, dasani, evian, etc.) that are only meant to be used one time. So, while it is good that you are drinking more water, buy a heavy plastic that is dishwasher safe and reusable - these don't breakdown as quickly and are much healthier and environmentally friendly!

My friend Jill posted this picture on Facebook today and I completely agree with her sentiment, " Really? Is food coming to an end? Who eats this junk???"

Getting Started

This blog is going to be dedicated to everything I consider pertinent to my life. As a dietitian who is also an athlete and a dog lover, as I find interested articles, photos and topics, I plan on posting them on my blog. I hope to post several nutrition tips each week. Here goes...
